PMC’s Effort to Mitigate Unwanted Pregnancy in Mexico

A South Burlington, Vermont resident, Bill "William" Ryerson holds a degree in biology from Yale University and serves as the president of a global sustainability non-profit and broadcast production partner, Population Media Center (PMC), which carries out broadcast media programs to target a wide range of families and individuals in developing countries. Under Bill Ryerson’s guidance, PMC supports OrientaSex platform in an effort to prevent or eliminate unwanted teen pregnancies.

Teenage pregnancy has been one of the most rampant problems worldwide, and organizations like PMC have worked on projects that keep adolescents aware of healthy and efficient preventive measures. One of PMC’s dramas that centers on this goal is Vencer el Miedo ("Overcome the Fear").

Overcome the Fear promotes healthier reproductive behaviors in females. It supports the use of contraceptives as a safe and efficient pregnancy control measure. The show also reveals how this practice can help reduce the frequency of unwanted pregnancies. In Mexico, Vencer el Miedo airs on the popular cable operator and media company Televisa during weekdays. As of 2020, the show had an average of 3.5 million night viewers. It was also one of the most-watched programs by teenagers in the country.
